Quarantine Challenge: Reverse-Engineered Camera Clip

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

One day to reverse engineer, CAD, and visualize a found object.

Above: the final detail render

This object presented more challenges than other pieces I've practiced CADing. Rounded profiles and edges required splines, as opposed to circles and tangent lines. Using the Sketch Picture tool in SOLIDWORKS, I was able to trace out this object's unique profile from a series of several reference images.

In projects involving visualization, I employ Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Adobe Illustrator is especially useful, as you can export vector artwork to SOLIDWORKS paths. For the rubber backing on the clip, I used blend options to create the repeating, linear pattern. I also added the Peak Design logo. After completing the pattern in Illustrator, I could perform a simple, extruded cut after importing the paths into SOLIDWORKS.

Below are images of the physical object, as well as screenshots of the CAD model.
